The bays and shores of many of the ponds and lakes in Northern Iowa are free from ice and full of migrating ducks in their spring splendor. The hooded green crest, rusty breast, gray sides, white neck-ring, red bill and red eye are the distinguishing marks of the male red breasted merganser, seen here getting scolded by a female.
